Those who have loose skin under the neck from aging or weight loss are ideal candidates for neck lift surgery, or “platysmaplasty.” This procedure is often done along with a facelift but can provide significant improvement to the neck as a stand-alone procedure.
A neck lift can accomplish the following:
- Reduction of excess skin and fat
- Correction of a “double chin”
- Improvement of wrinkles and “bands” around the neck
Neck Lift Procedure Process
Following sedation or general anesthesia, Dr. Schmelzer will make a small incision under the chin. The soft tissue and muscles beneath the skin can be tightened with sutures to recreate the angle between the jawline and neck. If needed, small incisions can be made around the earlobes to further define the jawline. Liposuction can also be performed if excess fat is present.
Neck Lift Recovery and Results
Following neck lift surgery, most patients will experience tightness and soreness in the neck. Swelling and bruising should improve within a few days.
While a neck lift cannot stop the signs of aging, it can ‘set back’ the clock.
Neck Lift Potential Complications
As with any surgical procedure, there are some risks associated with neck lift surgery. These include but are not limited to:
- Infection
- Numbness
- Neck tightness
- Asymmetry
- Skin irregularities
