(Blepharoplasty)
Sagging upper eyelids and puffy bags under the eyes can make a person appear sad, tired, and older than they actually are. To remedy these signs of aging, Dr. Schmelzer offers the eyelid lift procedure, or “blepharoplasty.” An eyelid lift can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both to tighten the eyelid skin and reposition displaced fat and tissue.
An eyelid lift can help with the following:
- Excess skin covering the natural fold of the upper eyelids
- Sagging skin in the upper eyelids that may impair vision
- Dark circles and bags under the eyes
- Drooping skin in the upper or lower eyelids
Eyelid Lift Procedure Process
Either local or general anesthesia will be used for patient comfort during eyelid surgery. Our surgical team will monitor your heart rate, blood pressure, and the amount of oxygen in your blood to ensure your safety throughout the procedure. The technique to be performed for your surgery will depend on your facial anatomy and the results you desire.
Upper Eyelid Lift
Dr. Schmelzer will make incisions along the natural fold of the upper eyelids. Any excess fat, muscle, and loose skin that contributes to a drooping upper eyelid appearance will be reduced, and incisions will be closed with sutures.
Lower Eyelid Lift
The incisions for the lower eyelid lift may be made either a few millimeters below the lash line or inside the lower eyelid. Any fat, muscle, or loose skin contributing to puffiness or bags under the eyes will be reduced or repositioned.
Eyelid Lift Recovery and Results
The length of recovery time for eyelid surgery will vary depending on the technique used and the way the body responds to the procedure. Swelling and bruising will be apparent for the first few weeks after surgery. A “tight” sensation may be felt around the eyes that can be minimized with pain medication. Vision may be somewhat blurred for the first couple of days, and the eyes may be temporarily sensitive to light. Any tearing, dryness, burning, or itching that may occur can be relived with eye drops. Bending, lifting, and strenuous activity should be avoided during the early postoperative period.
While results are long lasting with eyelid lift surgery, you will continue to age naturally. Consistent sun protection can help maintain the best results.
Eyelid Lift Potential Complications
Fortunately, significant complications are rare with eyelid lift surgery. However, potential risks include the following:
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Changes in skin sensation
- Damage to underlying structures
- Impaired eyelid function
- Dryness
- Irritation
- Scarring
